Steve Lustig - Project Director
Building community has been one of Steve’s passions, beginning with work as an activist in the ‘60s. He retired from the University of California, Berkeley as Associate Vice Chancellor Emeritus, Health and Human Services. Currently, he is a board member of Ashby Village and the chair of the Berkeley Continuum, both nonprofit organizations focused on helping older people age well in their community. He was appointed by Mayor Jesse Arreguín to lead the Age Friendly initiative in 2016.
Tanya Bustamante - AGING SERVICES DIVISION DIRECTOR, CITY OF BERKELEY
Tanya is the Aging Services Manager for the City of Berkeley Health, Housing, & Community Services (HHCS) Department. She has worked with the City for approximately 10 years, and has a passion for collaborating with, and serving the community. Tanya has a Master of Public Health degree from UC Berkeley, and a Doctorate of Public Health degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago. Tanya works closely with her Age Friendly Berkeley initiative partners to ensure that issues concerning the older adults of the Berkeley community remain at the forefront of the HHCS Department’s work.
Kathryn Stambaugh - GERIATRIC SERVICES DIRECTOR AT LIFELONG MEDICAL CARE
Kathryn has been with LifeLong Medical Care since 2003. In her current role as Geriatric Services Director, she is responsible for strategic planning and implementation of projects that support the health and well-being of older adults. She serves on the Board of Directors of DayBreak Adult Care Centers and the Berkeley Pilgrimage Foundation, as well as the Steering Committee for the Senior Services Coalition of Alameda County. Kathryn has master’s degrees in business and public health from UC Berkeley and a BA from the University of Virginia.
Thomas Gregory - DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE BERKELEY CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING
Thomas Gregory has over 20 years of experience working for the rights and integration of people with disabilities. Thomas joined the Center for Independent Living's staff in 2008 and became Deputy Director in 2015. His current responsibilities include contract compliance, governmental relations, and public policy. Thomas is a member (and past chair) of the Oakland Mayor's Commission on Persons with Disabilities. He has a BA in philosophy from the University of Southern California and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis. Thomas spends most of his spare time trying to improve his Internet Scrabble Club ranking.
Andy Gaines - Executive Director of Ashby Village
Andy Gaines became the founding Executive Director of Ashby Village in 2010. He has pursued a goal of changing the culture of aging in this country throughout his career and brings skills including nonprofit leadership, real estate management and counseling, as well as training in mediation and facilitation. He has been certified by the California Department of Social Services as an administrator for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly. The father of two, Andy and his family live in the Berkeley Hills and, watching his children grow, he is constantly enamored of the miraculous cycle of a life.
Rachel Bell - GRADUATE STUDENT INTERN
Rachel is a Master of Public Health student at UC Berkeley in the Health and Social Behavior concentration. She studied neuroscience and was the lab manager for the Berkeley Aging Cohort Study, a research project studying healthy cognitive aging, before starting graduate school. She is passionate about using public policy to address the social and environmental conditions that cause health inequity among older adults.
Abbey Dykhouse - GRADUATE STUDENT INTERN
Abbey Dykhouse has a BA from UC Berkeley in Psychology and an MSW from UC Berkeley in Social Work with an emphasis in Aging. She continues to use her skills and knowledge she gathered while working on the Age Friendly Berkeley Project in her company that focuses on helping older individuals thrive in their communities. Nancy Frank - SURVEY CONSULTATION
Nancy Frank offers "full circle" consulting services which include strategic planning, program development, and evaluation. Her approach increases the capacity of community-based organizations and local public agencies to promote equity and social justice, to plan their efforts, and to achieve their mission. Nancy specializes in foundation, local government and non-profit grant making and service programs focused on safety net services to low income and immigrant communities with emphasis on aging, healthy communities, and healthy families. Nancy has a BA from Tufts University and an MPH from UC Berkeley with additional evaluation training from the American Evaluation Association and the Evaluator’s Institute. https://www.nancyfrank.net/
